Based on the famous Alexandre Dumas novel : The Count of Monte Cristo.
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, is basicly the same story, of love and vengeance, but with a sci-fi side that make it even better than the original.

One of the thing that make Gankutsuou special is the way the visual was made.  Gankutsuou's unusual visual style layers textures into digital animation, with backgrounds often rendered in 3D, is absolutely amazing.
The story is around Albert De Morcerf, who become friends with the Count and get used by him to make is mad plot of vengeance work.

The Count, a self-made nobleman, is a sophisticated and very intelligent man, that knows what he want and how to get it, no matter what's the price.  

This anime is very well made, the plot, even if you already know the original story of The count of Monte Cristo, will keep you on the edge of your sit.  It's a must-see, to all anime fan, either for the visual or the story.
